ZTE Axon 20 5G Is The First Phone In The World With An In-Display Front Camera

Smartphone manufacturers have been looking to innovate their products for quite some time now, being in the race to be the first company to achieve a particular feat, so it could be recognized as the pioneer in the market. We’ve seen plenty of design implementations in the past few years that have changed the way smartphones have looked. We saw bezels being shrunk immensely to make more room for the display - and that trend has trickled its way down to even budget devices now. Moreover, companies started opting for curved displays to make the sides made of “screen” as well - which also reached a great deal of popularity in the market. Perhaps the last big innovation we’ve seen is the in-display fingerprint scanner, which we also see widely available in smartphones these days.

The next big step to be taken was the fitting of a front selfie camera under the display. To make the front all screen, the front camera was left as the only obstruction in the way - as manufacturers tried different fixes for it such as flipping cameras, and motorized ones too which popped up from the top. These all were great implementations, but ones that also required a lot of space on the inside of the phone. They also weren’t as sustainable, as moving parts inside of a phone are always a threat.

Now, ZTE Axon 20 5G is finally in the market in China, as the first phone to commercially implement the in-display camera technology. We saw prototypes from other manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo - but none of them produced clear results, as there was always some sort of glare or unclarity. As for ZTE’s new device, the team shared a sample photo on Weibo to show everyone the quality of the selfie shooter.

The technology has been made possible by different display materials, special pixel matrix and a dual control chip as well.

The phone is currently live in the Chinese market for sale, as the pricing opted by ZTE is quite modest, and could actually give the OnePlus Nord a difficult time if it releases globally.
