What Is RCS? And How To Enable It On Your Android

Over the years, Apple and iOS has had the upper hand over Android devices on several key things. One such feature was the messaging app that came built-in in both devices. Apple has its much loved iMessage app, that iOS users absolutely adore and understandably so due to the rich features available inside the messaging app. The basic SMS app in android phones is usually bland, and only allows a limited amount of characters to be sent over per message, with very limited support for images and emojis. RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is an update to the messaging apps on android devices, looking to get more towards the standard of iMessage and Apple.

RCS And All Of Its Features

RCS is basically an update to all of the messaging or SMS apps on android phones in the U.S. If you reside in the U.S and have an Android device connected to a U.S phone carrier, then you can get this update. RCS takes the old SMS app and revamps it to look much more like iMessage and Whatsapp. The RCS app will let you send high quality images, videos, GIFS and all sorts of things to your contacts - something which wasn’t possible before with the SMS app. You can even receive and give ‘read’ receipts on texts, meaning you’ll now get the double tick if the other person has received your text and will be able to tell when they read your texts as well.

You will also get ‘typing’ bubbles when the other person is actually typing their message, which again is something that wasn’t available on the default SMS app, and has been on iMessage for quite a while now.

How Can You Enable RCS?

It’s fairly simple to get the RCS as your main messaging app. All you need to do is first be living in the US and have one of the phone carriers on your phone such as T-Mobile or Sprint, and then just update your phone carrier app from the playstore, and then the messaging app as well. That will upgrade you from SMS to RCS, and you’ll be able to enjoy all of the rich features from the Rich Communication Services.

You need to keep in mind, however, that these features will only come to play with Android-to-Android connection. Meaning, if you contact one of your iOS friends from your RCS app, you won’t be able to take advantage of its features. This is due to Apple not currently supporting RCS on their platform - but they’ve stated that they are looking into the matter and might support it in the future.
