Twitter is one of the biggest social media applications in the world, as it has hundreds of millions of users on the platform on a regular basis. Twitter is also known for its mode of interaction between average users and celebrities, organizations and people otherwise inaccessible for communication. Like most other social media outlets, a lot of celebrities and known personalities have their accounts on Twitter, and they use it to deliver information, or sometimes even to answer any queries that people may have. However, Twitter recently was taken over by a vicious attack from hackers, as the accounts of the richest and most trustworthy people in relevance to money were hacked.
Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk - these are the names of a few of the personalities who had their Twitter accounts hacked. It wasn’t anything personal though, as the hackers merely used the platforms of these celebrities who people trust and tweeted a scheme to get your money doubled through bitcoin. Of course it was unclear at first that their accounts were hacked, hence a lot of money was poured into the website that was mentioned in those tweets made by the hackers. Yes the success rate was pretty low, but considering the amount of audience the tweets reached, even a low success rate is enough to make a lot of money - and that’s exactly what happened. The hackers reportedly scammed about 110,000 US dollars.
Twitter expressed their grief about the situation, and stated that they’re working day and night to get to the bottom of the issue and make their security gates strong enough to never face such a cyber attack ever again. It will be difficult for the social media giant to give back the money to the people who spent it, so it will be interesting to see how the story further develops in the future.
