As Marques Brownlee from MKBHD said, good phones are getting cheap and cheap phones are getting good. Such should be the case for 2020 as well, as a lot of these phones on the list look to pack a punch at half the price of the regular flagships on the market. However, we’ve thrown a flagship or two in the list because of the fan following they have. Without further ado, let’s hop right into the list.
1.) OnePlus Z
Now there isn’t much information on the OnePlus Z that’s about to be released in the summer of 2020, we should be expecting a relatively cheaper device from the company. Although OnePlus was known mainly for their top-tier devices at mid-range prices, they’ve taken a different route now with the OnePlus 8 Pro, as they’ve provided all the top specs and features of a flagship without sacrificing much, like their previous models. In 2015, we saw a OnePlus X, which was a budget model from the company coming in at 250 dollars; whereas the model Z shouldn’t be expected to come at a similar price, it should definitely be much lower than its normal series. We should expect a MediaTek processor in it as well matching well with the 765 series from Snapdragon.
The Pixel 4a looks to be a promising phone, with a top-notch main camera taken right from the Pixel 4. You’re going to get a punch-hole display in the front, which aligns with the trend of 2020. Performance seems to be decent as well, as the phone is expected to have a Snapdragon 730, which matches well with the flagships of 2018. All in all, we can be sure that the 4a is going to be a great phone - perhaps a direct competitor to the iPhone SE 2, and will look to bring a unique perspective to the budget segment of the smartphone market.
3.) Samsung Galaxy Note 20
The Note series are expected to come out in 2020 fall, and they probably will be called the Note 20 and 20+, seeing the trend of the S series jumping from S10 to S20. You can expect the latest and greatest chipset installed in the phone, be it from Snapdragon or Exynos. The camera on the Note 20 series will be top-notch as well. We suggest to keep an eye out for any details on the S pen, because we do feel like Samsung will try to do something different this year with it.
4.) ASUS Zenfone 7
The Zenfone 6 was a great smartphone for its price; flagship processor, an above-par camera that rotated to become the front camera as well, and a clean software overall. These things at a price point of around 500 dollars at that time seemed like a great deal - and it still is. The Zenfone 7 should build upon that, and provide the best SoC inside, with a good camera and the same stock Android experience that was provided in the 6th iteration. We do hope that the price remains the same, so it still keeps the biggest reason for its popularity amongst the masses.
5.) Galaxy Fold 2
The original Galaxy Fold was a disappointment to say the least, and the folding mechanism didn’t really have the advantages that measured up to the price tag of 2 grands. We hope to see differences in the second iteration however, with a bigger screen on the outside that would be usable on its own. You’ll get a camera setup similar or the same as that of the S20 Ultra, and a large battery unit as well. We hope that Samsung can make the folding crease less noticeable, and can improve the build quality and design to make it feel and look more premium than it did with the first model.
With a lot of great phones coming in 2020, including the iPhone 12, we think these are the top 5 phones you should keep an eye out, because they will be well worth the wait.
