The conclusion is that most of the top 25 fastest 5G mobile phones are produced by Samsung, the overall download speed of Apple’s first 5G iPhones is slower than that of Android phones.
Opensignal shared the 5G performance report of mainstream mobile phones in the United States. In terms of download speed under the 5G network, Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 5G topped the list with an average 5G/4G download speed of 56Mbps.
Sixty percent of the top 25 are Samsung mobile phones. One of the reasons for this is that the test background is the US mobile phone market, and Samsung has a large market share. TCL’s Revvl 5G and OnePlus 8T+ ranked second and third with average speeds of 29.8 and 49.3Mbps, respectively. LG’s Velvet 5G ranked 25th with a speed of 37.8Mbps.
Are the iPhone 12 series not in the top 25? Yes, if only considering the download speed of the 5G network, the iPhone 12 disappoints users. Apple’s first 5G-enabled smartphones lag behind Android phones in average speed.
The average download speeds of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are 36.9Mbps and 36.2Mbps, respectively, while the average download speeds of the iPhone 12 and 12 mini are 29.6Mbps and 32.9Mbps, respectively.
However, there is also a comforting point: the iPhone’s network speed has increased significantly compared with the 4G era. Opensignal showed out that because the previous iPhone used Intel chips to cause 4G speeds to be very slow, after changing to Qualcomm chips, the iPhone 12’s increase in 5G relative to 4G speeds in the United States was 2.3 times higher than that of competitors such as Samsung and OnePlus.
However, the iPhone 12 series uses the same Qualcomm 5G modem as the Android phones and even supports mmWave millimeter wave technology, so why is the iPhone slow?
Ian Fogg, who wrote this report and led the Opensignal analysis team, said that Samsung and other Android manufacturers may be ahead of Apple in RF mobile phone radiofrequency design because modern mobile phones are not only about modems, and 5G/4G Performance will have an impact. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 is its third-generation 5G smartphone, while the iPhone 12 is Apple’s first-generation product. Therefore, Apple may need to do some work to strengthen the front-end RF design.
Besides, it should be noted that this test result can only represent some models in the US market, and the speed of the 5G network is related to many factors and cannot be judged entirely by this.
