The Huawei Mate 40 series was recently released by the Chinese manufacturer as a top-notch mobile lineup, all of which have great hardware and innovative technologies in the box. The Mate 40 comes with a wide range of interesting features and catches - but perhaps the first thing you’d set your eyes on is the build of the device, which certainly makes for an intriguing and appealing design right off the bat.
The Mate 40 has a matte finish, white looking glass back - which sincerely looks extremely different than all we’ve seen this year in any smartphone. The matte finish looks exquisite, and brings out the elegance of the phone - and perhaps it also explains why Huawei is only selling two color variants globally, white and black - because of how the white shifts to different color palettes depending on what angle light falls on it. It’s truly one of the best, if not the best looking smartphone in the market released this year.
One thing in the design aspect that does look peculiar, and almost sort of gives a nostalgic feeling upon looking at it is the circular ring at the back for the camera module. The disc or donut shaped camera module is certainly different from what we’ve seen this year from other phone makers - and Huawei is calling the design a Space Ring. I mean maybe you could see it resembling a UFO or some other space related entity - but we can’t help but think that it looks like an iPod that Apple used to make years ago. The circle reminds us of the iPod control pad, and even the matte finish sort of resembles how the texture of the iPod was.
The phone overall did get some improvements over previous models from Huawei post the Google ban - as Huawei has come a long distance including Petal Search for apps, Petal Maps and more applications to cover the void left by the exclusion of all Google services from the device.
