Thanks to the new mini-LED display technology, the thickness of the new iPad Pro is 0.5mm thicker than the previous iPad Pro. As explained by Apple, the difference in thickness is why the 12.9-inch iPad Pro cannot fully fit the previous-generation Magic Keyboard. Apple also reminded that the screen protector might further affect its fit.
Although the size is slightly different, Apple still writes in the support document that the previous-generation Magic Keyboard will be 'functionally compatible' with the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
Earlier reports mentioned that the first-generation 12.9-inch Magic Keyboard, model A1998, will not be compatible with the new 12.9-inch iPad. However, there have been speculations that although there are potential fit problems, the two may be functionally compatible, and Apple's latest support document confirms this. At least it saves money for a magic keyboard for users who are not too concerned about fit.
